In a departure from my normal practice of posting things 2 weeks or so after they happened, this is actually something that occurred yesterday evening. The kids and I were at the playground with my parents before we were supposed to head up to my brother Tom's house for a birthday BBQ. Drew was sliding down a slide, and suddenly he went over the edge. I think that he decided to jump off early or something.... he likes to pretend that he is Indiana Jones sometimes when he is at the playground. He didn't land so well, as his foot kind of got hung up on the edge of the slide and when he fell, his wrist took most of the impact. Still, it looked like the same kind of fall that I have seen a hundred times before with him and other kids. So I was surprised when he got up and tearfully started walking towards me and I could see that his arm right above the wrist just wasn't shaped the right way. My mom came to the same realization at the same time. She asked some other picnickers if we could have some of their ice, and I made some phone calls and tried to be the comforting mother.
Andy left work and met up with us and we headed off to the ER at Anne Arundel Medical Center. They did an excellent job getting him all patched up, and Drew was a really good sport through it all. The x-rays confirmed a broken radius close to the wrist. As far as broken bones go, they said this is a good one that will not give him any long term problems. After the hospital, we went over to Tom's to drop by the party and to pick up Sydney and Matt, who were there with my parents. Drew was glad that we could make it for cake and ice cream and that he could show his cast to some of his cousins.
Sadly, it is his left wrist that is broken and Drew is left handed. Monday is his first day back to school and we are also supposed to go and see an orthopedic specialist to get his long term cast on that day as well. He is a little bit sad to have to sit out on the soccer season that just started, and the cast and sling are obviously bothering him but his spirits are high. No broken arms are getting between him and his lego playing.

He will be all healed before you know it. It was awful to watch though.
He seems to be taking it in stride. What a way to start the new school year!
Poor drew!! Your mom called and filled us in..my kids all felt so bad for him. David wanted to go visit him, but that was difficult since we were 1000 miles away! tell him his cousins are thinking of him!
Poor guy! I hope he heals(ed) quickly.
Oh my Gosh...that must have been scary. At least no writing for the first few weeks of school though, right?
